Effects of Taxes on Economy: Economic aspects of taxation have a direct influence on programmer the demand and supply in interview, specific industries, in which the latter are imposed, and on the entire economy at large. Programmer? Taxes , as described the Lexico Publishing Group (2007), are “sum[s] of money demanded by a government for its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc.” Thus, the purpose of taxes is to take away the money from producers for their possibility of producing and selling the product, or from the consumers for their possibility to buy the product. In any case, both parties suffer financial losses. Thus, taxes have a negative impact on interesting research paper topics the economic aspects of an industry. We can write a custom essay on Taxes for you!

Dan Frake (2006) and Francois Joseph de Kermadec (2004) have analyzed the prices of programmer computers produced by the Apple Corporation, coming up to the conclusion that regardless of the public convention of interesting research topics Mac’s being more expensive, the detailed comparison of Mac’s and PC’s have demonstrated the opposite. The false public opinion comes from the fact that Mac’s are not offered in light versions, while PC are supplied in the various version from extra-light to heavy-professional. Now, let me demonstrate the economic model of this industry from the standpoint of taxation. Taxes, as mentioned earlier, would affect the demand and supply in a negative way. The short explanation is the following: consumers have to buy the product at a higher price than the initial price, and programmer, suppliers have to receive smaller revenue for hamlet's soliloquies, the products they sell. In economic terms, however, the effect of taxation is the following.

When a tax is imposed on any party – demand or supply, the curve of programmer this party shifts left. The new curve is shifted to growth soliloquies, the left to the point where its vertical distance to the initial curve equals the tax for one product unit. Interestingly, regardless of on programmer whom the tax is imposed, the economic effect is the is the thesis the last sentence, same, suppliers receive less and consumers pay more. If a 10% tax is imposed on the producers, the supply curve shifts left until its vertical distance to the initial supply curve is 10% of the unit price. As a result, the resume, suppliers have to eeg research papers, supply a smaller number of programmer units and receive a smaller amount for abetterearth contest, each unit. The consumers in this model would pay a higher price for the units that are not readily available on the market. And if the tax is levied on the consumers, the curve shifts left the same way, and programmer resume, the end effect of taxation is the same: consumers pay more, and interview paper, suppliers receive less. In a taxed industry or market, as opposed to the ideal market environment, the equilibrium point is never achieved. The equilibrium point is that perfect combination of price and quantity, at which both the suppliers and the consumers are satisfied.

The equilibrium point forms naturally on the market, and any intrusion from without – a tax in programmer resume, our case – influences the college research topics, transaction price and quantity in a negative way. However, the natural equilibrium point stays the same regardless of the intrusions from the programmer resume, government. What taxes do is they shift the price and quantity artificially, forming the new prices and quantities of transaction, but not equilibrium. Environmental Contest? As the diagram shows, the taxes make the consumers buy the product at a higher price, while the producers are not willing to sell it at that price in quantities demanded. In order to pay the tax, the producer and the consumer have to split the tax in halves. Programmer? Graphically, it is shown to the left of the equilibrium point; as the supply and demand diverge, the new quantity Qt is formed as the vertical difference between supply and demand equals to is the the last, the unit tax. Thus, the consumer will pay the amount received by the producer plus tax (regardless of who actually pays the resume, tax).

Thus, at a new smaller quantity, suppliers satisfy their need to sell less at lower price, and consumers satisfy their need to buy less at the higher price, which explains the abetterearth environmental essay, new smaller quantity. Getting back to the computer industry, it could happen that as new technologies develop, scientists invent some hyper-powerful technology – nano-computers, which would be relatively cheap compared to its features and parameters. In this hypothetical scenario, consumers would be no longer willing to programmer resume, buy regular computers at current prices, and the curve would significantly shift left. The result of this is the drop of equilibrium price and quantity. Such situation might invoke price floors inflicted by the government.

In this case, suppliers would be prohibited from lowering the price. In that case, the price for regular computer would be higher than the equilibrium price. Hamlet's Through Essay? Thus, consumers would not want to buy products at resume, that amount (for they could buy a nono-computer at the same price), while producers would be willing to sell more of computers at hamlet's through, that artificial price. However, if producers were allowed to resume, lower the price to equilibrium, they would sell some Qe quantity, but even with prices raised, they would only sell Qd, which is smaller than equilibrium quantity for reasons described above. Such market environment would create significant surplus of goods, and sellers would me forced to absorb it. Eeg Research? In an opposite scenario, in which regular computers become very scarce, and the government sets a ceiling, consumers would search for more of that product, but the suppliers would not be able to cover their needs, for resume, they would not be willing to through, sell the product at a price, lower than the equilibrium. Thus, ceilings and floors have a negative effect regardless of the market environment. Programmer? Grammar and programmer, Style in British English: The modern essay is a fairly short piece of work of between 500 and papers, 3,000 words, written on a well-defined subject intended for reading in programmer resume, a. single session. Shorter works are known as vignettes while longer ones are called extended essays or dissertations. A doctoral thesis can. reach100,000 words, after which the work becomes book size. Like all scripts, essays draw from the two principal styles of writing, narrative and exposition. To summarise I n short, narrative is artistic writing and research, exposition is academic writing. This is not to say that these two forms of writing never converge.

On the contrary, the works of journalists, travel writers and biographers often draw. heavily upon the techniques of both, b ut exposition and programmer resume, narrative remain recognisably different styles, and essays, for the most part, are written in. one or the other. The narrative and expository essay each has a close relation. The descriptive essay is an offshoot of the narrative essay, and the argumentative. essay, an offshoot of the expository. Four kinds of essay are thus discussed here, followed by a few tips on drafting the expository essay (analysing, defining or explaining) Narrative is storytelling, the chronological relation of events.

It is the most natural way of thesis the last sentence, writing because it is the most natural way of speaking ( first I. did this and then I did that ) which is why it is the most deceptively simple of styles. Consider, for example, how one person can relate an anecdote. about her children and have us in fits of laughter while another does the same and bores us to distraction. Some people are skilled narrators while. What goes for speech, goes for writing.

To write narrative well is difficult; to write it badly in the belief that it has been written well is unfortunately all. too easy. A probable reason for this self-deception is the virtual universality of literacy. Few among us can paint a picture or play a musical instrument, so we easily recognise the skills of those who can. Programmer? But everybody ‘writes’.

Little wonder, then, that far more people say they are going to write a book. one day than say they are going to master the violin, while they are as ill-equipped to do the one as do the other. Many useful learn-to-write books are. available, and one of through soliloquies essay, their most frequent pieces of advice is worth repeating: If you suspect it’s rubbish, it is programmer . Writing narrative writing to entertain people might be the anatomy of a paper, most difficult kind of prose to write, but we have all probably attempted it. The most. rudimentary examples are the time-honoured titles we tackled in programmer resume, primary school: 'A Rainy Day'; 'How I Spent my Summer Holidays'. More. sophisticated examples range from the short stories of papers, such masters as Saki and O. Henry to modern novels, the consummate form of resume, narrative. Narrative essays, in fact, usually appear in the form of short stories or biographical anecdotes, and hamlet's growth through, the author, just like the novelist, needs to appeal. to the reader's emotions and draw him into a world of the author's creation.

How this is achieved, of course, is more easily said than done, yet there. are several devices that can be recognised in the works of successful authors. Narrative essays and short stories are often written in the first person ( I ). This lends them authenticity and allows the reader more easily to programmer identify. with the character experiencing the interesting college research paper topics, events. The drawback is that the first person constrains the programmer resume, writer to one point of view, allowing nothing to abetterearth occur.

in the script that the central character does not himself or herself directly experience. There can be no he thought and she thought , only I thought . While it is important in all essays to win the reader’s attention quickly, nowhere is this more important than in narrative. With an expository essay, as. we shall see, the reader is looking for information or explanation. Entertainment is a bonus. With the narrative essay, on the other hand, entertainment.

is expected. Programmer Resume? This initial interest can be achieved by means of the narrative hook, whereby the first few sentences capture the reader’s attention. The. hook can be dramatic, funny, thought-provoking, mysterious or controversial, just as long as it motivates the reader to turn the abetterearth essay contest, crucial first few pages.. Narrative almost always focuses on some form of programmer, conflict: a conflict between people, between a person and the elements or between one person’s. desires and conscience. A lack of conflict is mla format interview research paper one of the main reasons readers give up on scripts and say that ‘nothing was happening’. Conflict also. helps to create tension and suspense, and programmer, the writer needs to learn the interesting college research paper topics, skill of revealing information partially and slowly. The denouement (plot. resolution) finally resolves the conflict or tension and creates that sense of satisfaction that readers of narrative expect.

Writers of good narrative follow the much-proffered advice for all story writing: Don’t tell! Show! In other words, readers should be allowed to see. characters in action rather than have those actions described for them. My partner, John, had taken a new teaching post at resume St. Giles’, a tough. new comprehensive school, but after only a month it became obvious. that the job was wearing him down. He came home from work one. evening, looking dreadful and clearly very upset, and announced that.

I sighed as the front door slammed again with unnecessary force. Just. four weeks at St. Giles’ Comprehensive and John was turning into a man. I neither knew nor liked. He walked into the living room and sank into the. settee.

That facial muscle had begun to is the sentence twitch again as he stared at programmer resume nothing. at all. Then he looked at me, as if surprised to find himself at home. In the same way, characters’ moods and feelings should be revealed rather than described, an end achieved by using nouns and is the thesis statement the last, verbs more than. adjectives and adverbs. Adverbs, in programmer resume, particular, are often apologies for research, poor narrative Samantha stared worriedly out of the window. (Describing) Samantha stared out of the window, gnawing her lower lip. (Revealing) Sometimes, the programmer, adverbs can simply be deleted Readers want to infer the moods and anatomy of a research paper, feelings of characters for themselves, not be led by the nose. T he writer should also minimise the uses of he said and she said . But where necessary, it is programmer wiser to essay keep to said rather than employ the so-called. ‘elegant variation’ that is characteristic of the amateur: she exclaimed , he retorted . In contrast to programmer expository essays, opinions need not be supported by evidence. Feelings more than reasoned arguments are what interest the reader.

Narrative enjoys considerable grammatical licence in order to abetterearth essay contest represent the ways in programmer, which people speak and think. Is The The Last Sentence? The fused sentence is never. advisable, but sentence fragments, the one-word ‘sentence’ and sentences that begin with conjunctions are all effective devices for emulating. thought, as if the character were actually thinking aloud How dare he talk to me like that! And in front of Katy, too. I said. nothing. Just watched him strut off to programmer the kitchen in his socks. Then. he cried out and swore as he stubbed his toe against the leg of the.

Finally, short narratives (in distinction to longer works such as novels) often follow one or more of the ‘unity’ principles: unity of hamlet's growth through soliloquies, person, place and. time. Programmer? Unity of papers, person keeps the reader in one person’s mind; unity of place keeps him in the same location, rather like a scene from resume a play or a film; and unity of time keeps him moving in real time; there are no jumps forward ( The following day, ) and certainly no flashbacks. Everything unfolds in. an unbroken duration. College Research Topics? Although by no means rules, these principles of unity often make for excellent narrative . Programmer? 1. Descriptive essays as such are rarely encountered outside creative-writing courses.

Their nearest approximations elsewhere are passages or entire. chapters from larger works, such as novels, where the plot is temporarily suspended in order to mla format research linger on something of interest. But the description. must be graphic, not encyclopaedic. An essay describing quantum theory or describing how a bill goes through Parliament would be an expository, not a descriptive, essay.

A descriptive essay creates a vivid and colourful picture of something, along with a central mood or impression, and the. writing is sensuous, appealing to as many of the five senses as possible; at appropriate times, the writer will describe not just sight and sound, but. also touch, taste and smell. The subject of resume, description might be almost anything: a room, a valley, a person, a storm, an erotic experience. Topics? The important thing is that the reader. feels he is vicariously experiencing something rather than simply reading about programmer resume, it It was near midnight, and interesting paper topics, ever since dusk I had been tramping the naked.

moors, in the teeth of programmer, as vicious a nor’-wester as ever drenched a man to. the skin, and then blew the cold home to his marrow. My clothes were. sodden; my coat-tails flapped with a noise like pistol shots; my boots. squeaked as I went. Overhead, the October moon was in her last quarter, and might have been a slice of finger-nail for all the light she afforded. Two-thirds of the time the contest, wrack blotted her out altogether; and programmer resume, I, with.

my stick clipped tight under my armpit, eyes puckered up, and head bent. aslant, had to keep my wits alive to distinguish the road from the black. heath to right and hamlet's soliloquies essay, left. For three hours I had met neither man nor man’s. dwelling, and (for all I knew) was desperately lost. Indeed, at the cross- roads two miles back, there had been nothing for me but to programmer choose the. way that kept the wind on through soliloquies essay my face, and it gnawed me like a dog. (Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, ‘The Two Householders’) 2. Expository and argumentative essays are the ones most commonly encountered in academia, and are much more formal compositions than those. described above. Exposition means ‘explaining’, ‘analysing’ or ‘defining’, and the subject of an expository essay is anything so exposed: the programmer, meaning.

of a poem, a political doctrine, a philosophical idea, the eeg research, causes of a war, an economic development and so forth. Resume? The exposition, moreover, is. precise. A philosophy essay, for college research topics, example, will need scrupulously to define its central concepts, a task that requires a fastidiousness of thought for. which the impressionistic language of narrative is wholly unsuited. In some cases (explained below), elements of narrative might be permissible, but. this shifts the essay closer to the journalistic article, a move of programmer, which some academics might disapprove. As we might remember from school, the expository essay comprises three sections: the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction typically consists of is the statement sentence, about ten per cent of the programmer, essay and normally includes a thesis statement: usually one or two sentences that. explain the essay, purpose of the essay. The thesis statement is to the essay what the programmer resume, topic sentence is to the paragraph: a brief outline of what is to.

follow. Its length and position, however, will be determined by the nature of the material and by the reader’s requirements, although it should not. normally appear later than the interesting paper topics, second paragraph. In the most intellectually demanding of essays, the entire introduction might be a virtual thesis statement, forming, so to speak, the writer’s briefing. to her readers before taking them on a journey. That journey is likely to be difficult, so her readers will need a map.

They will need to programmer know their. destination and what the main stopping places are to be along the way. And while there might be a few relevant diversions en route , there will be no. radical change of direction from that plotted in the introduction (which is why the introduction is often the interesting college paper topics, last part of the essay to be written). In this. way, the resume, introduction becomes an of a scientific research encapsulation of the programmer resume, entire essay, including the is the thesis statement the last, conclusion To examine the concept of justice in Plato’s Republic , we need first to. distinguish the resume, several ways in which that concept can be understood. Having outlined the four principal meanings of the word, we shall. proceed to investigate which (or which combination) of them the.

Platonic Socrates most likely has in mind in his dialogues, first with. Glaucon and research paper topics, then Thrasymachus. We shall conclude that the. preponderant concept is distributive justice, with possible connotations. of remedial justice, and that, given Socrates’ paradoxical belief that ‘no.

one does wrong willingly’, retributive justice does not figure at all. Assuming the reader to be familiar with Plato’s Republic , he now has a fairly good idea of what to expect from the resume, essay. He knows from the opening. clause that the purpose is to examine Platonic justice, while the college topics, rest of the paragraph (and there might be two or three) brings the thesis more sharply. into focus for him. An introduction such as this might also include an programmer resume explanation of any unfamiliar or stipulated terms to be used in topics, the essay ( We. shall understand procedural justice to mean ), but it is arguably wiser to programmer resume deal with them as they occur in the body of the essay where they are likely. to be better remembered. In expository essays of a less intellectually rigorous nature, the thesis statements will be correspondingly shorter The subject of inquiry is how AIDS is being combated in developing. The problem to be addressed is why, in spite of the government’s ban. on hand guns, there has been a dramatic rise in eeg research papers, armed crime since the.

What do we mean by programmer, ‘freedom of the press’? This is the question we. shall attempt to answer. The evidence will be considered both for and against the claim that. David Copperfield was Dickens’s clandestine autobiography. Jazz is arguably America’s greatest contribution to statement world culture. Here. we will examine its three main early influences: ragtime, gospel and programmer, the.

Note the specificity of the statements and that the ‘statements’ can actually be questions. Abetterearth Essay? A thesis statement that proposes to discuss ‘the problem. of AIDS’ or ‘the problem of armed crime’ could be considered rather too general. The most natural place for the thesis statement is at the beginning. As the opening sentence or sentences, the statement immediately informs the. reader of what the essay is to be about before he settles down to programmer resume read it. This is eeg research probably the wisest course if the essay is programmer being written for an. exclusively academic readership (e.g. a college tutor). Interesting College Paper? If, on the other hand, the essay is to appeal to the wider readership of, say, a magazine, the.

writer might wish to programmer build up some interest before coming to the thesis statement. Hamlet's Through Soliloquies Essay? This technique, called funnelling, feeds the reader a little. anecdotal information that gradually tapers to the thesis statement, usually at the end of the first paragraph. Suppose, for programmer, example, that the topic is to be the surprise result of the 1992 British general election. If the work is an hamlet's through essay undergraduate politics essay, the writer would be wise to open with the thesis statement The topic of investigation is why, in programmer resume, the run up to the general election of. April 1992, the opinion polls so spectacularly failed to predict a Conservative. If, instead, the mla format paper, work is to programmer resume appear in a journal or magazine, the writer might choose to interview research paper funnel it with an programmer resume introduction such as this On the college, morning of 9 April, 1992, Neil Kinnock, Leader of the Labour. Party since 1983, was in programmer resume, buoyant mood. He had good reason to be. Under. the Conservatives, Britain was going through its worst recession since.

the 1930s, and the devaluation crisis of ‘Black Wednesday’ was still. painfully fresh in people’s minds. He sensed victory, and mla format research paper, the opinion polls. encouraged him. Labour, they said, was heading for programmer resume, a clear victory. Thirty-six hours later, notwithstanding 39 Tory losses and 42 Labour. Gains, it was clear that John Major would be the man to walk back. through the door of Number Ten to lead his party in contest, its fourth consecutive. term of office. Why, then, did the opinion polls so spectacularly fail? Here, the writer has included an programmer element of narrative in her exposition in order to generate interest in abetterearth essay contest, readers who, unlike college tutors, are under no.

obligation to read the script. Assuming all the research has been completed, the writer now has to organise her information into a coherent body of resume, paragraphs, each setting out. one or more points that develop the thesis statement. Statement? This can be done in a number of ways, but it is resume worth noting that readers tend to remember the. beginning and is the statement sentence, the end of the programmer, body more than the middle. The recommended technique, therefore, is to arrange the material into a hierarchy of. arguments from the most to the least important and essay contest, then to present them accordingly. To continue with our election example, this might be achieved.

In her notes, suppose, the writer has randomly listed six explanations of why the polls were so wide of the mark 1. So-called ‘floating voters’ are notoriously fickle and apt to programmer change. their minds even in the polling booth. campaign against the Labour Party in the last few days before the. 3. Although John Major presented a softer image than Margaret. Thatcher, the latter’s ‘uncaring’ legacy was such that many. Conservative supporters were afraid of being perceived as immoral. by revealing their party allegiance to the opinion pollsters.

4. Opinion pollsters need quick, unambiguous answers, and papers, Conservative. supporters are traditionally more circumspect about their voting. intentions than their Labour counterparts. 5. Opinion pollsters are almost always racing against the clock, and among. their temptations is to avoid knocking the doors of houses with long. drives, the programmer, more likely dwellings of Conservative supporters. 6. The Labour Party seemed to be celebrating victory prematurely, and. many of their potential voters resented this ‘arrogance’. These six points will comprise the body of the essay and the writer now has to arrange them in order of importance. The first thing she spots is through essay that only resume three of these points specifically address the 1992 election as opposed to interview paper elections in general, namely 2, 3. and 6. These, then, are the most important topics and will somehow be arranged to appear at the beginning and the end of the body.

Of these, the writer might now decide that the press campaign (2) has the programmer resume, greatest explanatory value. For while the is the statement the last sentence, Tories’ uncaring image (3) and. Labour’s premature celebrations (6) were contributory factors, they were nothing like as decisive in thwarting the opinion polls as the final press. onslaught on Labour’s taxation policy led by The Sun . Point 2, then, will be the last to be made and will be given full paragraph status. Next, she. decides that point 6 is more important than point 3, so 6 will come somewhere in the first paragraph and 3 in the penultimate. So far, then, the arrangement of the six-point body is Of the remaining points, those most likely to provide new and resume, interesting information to the reader are probably the problems and practices of opinion. pollsters (4 and 5), while the interesting college topics, prevarication of floating voters (1) is fairly common knowledge. In fact, our writer decides that 1 has the least explanatory. value and might as well be got quickly out of the way in a dependent clause as a point of small consequence Here, then, is the completed body with the introductory paragraph again On the morning of 9 April, 1992, Neil Kinnock, Leader of the Labour. Party since 1983, was in buoyant mood.

He had good reason to be. Under the Conservatives, Britain was going through its worst recession. since the 1930s and the devaluation crisis of ‘Black Wednesday’ was. still painfully fresh in resume, people’s minds. He sensed victory, and the opinion. polls encouraged him.

Labour, they said, was heading for a clear victory. Thirty-six hours later, notwithstanding 39 Tory losses and growth through, 42 Labour. Gains, it was clear that John Major would be the man to walk back. through the door of programmer resume, Number Ten to lead his party in is the thesis sentence, its fourth consecutive. term of office. Why, then, did the opinion polls so spectacularly fail? Apart from the notoriously fickle behaviour of floating voters, who have. been known to programmer prevaricate even with the pencil in their hands (1) , the. Labour machine was celebrating victory early. No one admires pessimism. in politics, but this flamboyant optimism - the almost indecent haste of.

moving the Kinnock furniture into Number Ten before the count had. properly begun - was perceived as rather un-British. This would almost. certainly have been enough to tip the scales to the Tories for potentially. first-time Labour supporters (6) . A second reason is the considerable difficulty opinion polls encounter in. acquiring truly representative samples. Pollsters require neat unambiguous. answers, and Labour supporters are traditionally more forthcoming in this. respect than their Conservative counterparts (4) . To exacerbate the hamlet's growth through essay, problem, they are almost always racing against the clock, and among their temptations. is to avoid knocking the doors of houses with long drives, the more likely. dwellings of Conservative supporters (5) . Odd though it might seem, another factor that contributed to the inaccurate.

predictions was embarrassment. For thirteen years, the image of the. Conservative Party had inexorably been hardening. During Margaret. Thatcher’s premiership, it came to be seen, rightly or wrongly, as the party. of naked capitalism, a capitalism no longer tempered by the noblesse oblige. of gentleman Tories such as Edward Heath and Lord Carrington.

Both by. her rhetoric and her deeds, the Iron Lady seemed to have revived the. nineteenth-century belief that it is a necessary condition of progress that the. weak go to the wall. Programmer Resume? That John Major might have presented a softer image. could make no impact on the legacy of environmental essay contest, successive governments that were. clandestinely privatising the health service and programmer resume, binding the hands of trade.

unions with legal tape. Little wonder, then, that many of its supporters were. reluctant to stand and be counted (3) . No one, however, was prepared for the unprecedented onslaught against the. Labour Party led by The Sun . In just a few days, the paper managed to turn. the tide to research paper the Tories’ advantage by raising the spectre of Labour’s taxation. policy (‘Will the last person to leave Britain please turns off the resume, lights’). Notwithstanding that many of those frightened by the tax Bogey Man were the. low waged who stood materially to benefit by Labour’s progressive income tax, the campaign succeeded, sealing Labour’s fate and causing some red faces. among the professional pollsters (2) . Different and better constructions of the research paper topics, body might be possible, but the principle remains: priority is best given to the beginning and resume, the end. One of the weaknesses of eeg research papers, conclusions sometimes is that they exist at all.

Having produced a reasonably good essay, the writer will often feel. constrained to programmer write ‘a conclusion’ because this is what she has been told she should do, not realising that she might already have concluded it. well. What, for anatomy scientific research, example, could fruitfully be added to our sample essay on the 1992 election? If we accept that the main purpose of a conclusion is. to confirm that the resume, essay has fulfilled its thesis statement, then there is interesting really nothing more to say.

At 500 words, on the other hand, our sample. essay is very short. In longer essays, with a correspondingly greater number of paragraphs in support of the programmer resume, thesis statement, the case for a formal. conclusion would be stronger. What, then, should a conclusion look like? Firstly, it should not merely be a summary of the essay; it must have. something original to say. Anatomy? Secondly, any questions set in the introduction or essay title should be explicitly answered. The evidence will have been.

provided in programmer resume, the body and now is the time to formulate it into answers. These answers might be preceded by a summary of the arguments that. appeared in the body, but only essay contest if those arguments have been sufficiently great in number or sufficiently complex to warrant one. A summing up in our. short essay above would be unnecessary and appear amateurish. Thirdly, the conclusion might be an inference drawn from the evidence of the body. Had it run to 2,000 words, say, the programmer, conclusion of our essay on the 1992 election might look like this Predicting human behaviour, then, is perhaps an paper topics art more than a science. However much the opinion pollsters agonise over their ‘blunder’ of 1992, it is inescapably the case that the factors influencing human conduct are. ones that are not easily amenable to scientific study. Lastly, the programmer resume, conclusion could draw the reader’s attention to the wider implications of the thesis statement, indicating that there are other important.

questions which can be raised. It will be beyond the scope of the present essay to answer these questions, but they can be posed in order to. stimulate interest and further research. For example, should polling organisations consider how they might achieve more representative samples? Should the apparent power of the press be a cause for concern?

In order to investigate the relationship between working-class occupations. and voting behaviour, I first interviewed five people from social grades C2. and D who consistently voted Labour. Next, I interviewed five people from. the same grades who consistently voted Conservative. This way of writing is probably the one that comes most naturally to us all, and research paper, the way an uninstructed first-year might produce her first expository. essay. Programmer Resume? The passage is clear and grammatically correct, but the use of the first person I is environmental contest inappropriate. To make matters worse, the writer is using the first person to describe what she is resume doing rather than what she is thinking. The reader does not need. to be told who carried out the research since the author’s name will be on the document.

In the text, the writer should concern herself only with what. was done and what was discovered, not with the fact that it was she who did or discovered it. As we shall see, the first person is sometimes justified. in the argumentative essay to express the writer’s opinions, but mere exposition should be completely impersonal. One method by which this impersonality might be achieved (and the method sometimes recommended) is to use the more detached third person In order to investigate the relationship between working-class occupations. and voting behaviour, the author first interviewed five people from social. grades C2 and D who consistently voted Labour. Next, she interviewed five.

people from the same grades who consistently voted Conservative. But this merely adds affectation to the problem. The writer is still drawing attention to herself by explaining what she did, succeeding only research paper in. compounding the issue by the inauthentic and archaic practice of referring to herself as if she were someone else. A better technique is to avoid reference to resume herself altogether In order to investigate the relationship between working-class occupations.

and voting behaviour, five people were interviewed from social grades C2. and D who consistently voted Labour. Next, five people from the same. grades were interviewed who consistently voted Conservative. The writer is now well out of sight. That the people in the survey were interviewed by her is understood but unsaid. The writer has maintained. authorial invisibility by using passive rather than active sentences.

But the drawback with a series of passive sentences is that they can make. for rather dull reading. One way around this problem is for the author to combine passive sentences with active ones in which he survey, or its. results, are the subject rather than she herself The results of the survey show that (active with a third-person subject) Another of the writer’s options is to abetterearth essay contest use the first-person plural we as the subject of active clauses and sentences. It is straying a little into informal. territory, but it is established academic practice and has the advantage of engaging the reader by resume, creating the impression that he is sitting side- by-side with the author As can be seen from the abetterearth environmental essay contest, diagram (passive and formal) As we can see from the programmer, diagram (active, engaging and of a paper, formally acceptable) What conclusions can be drawn from this?

What conclusions can we draw from programmer this? Two things need to be clarified We need to be clear about two things In expository essays, then, the mla format interview research, writer is best advised to keep her head down by resume, using a combination of • active sentences in which the subject is the topics, research method. (the survey, interview, questionnaire, experiment, etc.) (the author and her readers) In a sense, all academic essays are argumentative. The explanations and programmer, definitions of environmental essay contest, expository essays can always be challenged, so that even.

they have a necessarily persuasive element. But argumentative or persuasive essays, per resume se, are much more explicitly prescriptive compositions. and are generally encountered at and above the undergraduate rung of the academic ladder. Such essays (called papers if they are published or read to learned societies) might ostensibly appear as expository essays that purport merely. to explain something, but the original, radical or controversial nature of that explanation transforms them into argumentative essays.

Sir Isaiah. Berlin’s essay, ‘Two Concepts of Liberty’, 3 for example, sets out ‘to examine’ two kinds of freedom, but it rapidly becomes clear that the definitions. are not ones with which everyone will agree. The essay thus becomes argumentative by environmental contest, virtue of the opposition it sets out to programmer attract. But argumentative does not mean ‘belligerent’ (although academics can be as churlish and vindictive as anyone else). There is a world of difference. between persuading someone of something and merely winning an argument. The polemics of the party-political pamphlet, or the diatribes of.

‘Disgusted’ in the correspondence pages of the local newspaper, have no place in an argumentative essay. Such scripts must be just what they claim. to be: argumentative, not a series of of a scientific research, unsubstantiated or one-sided claims. It takes at least two to argue, so that the essay must either express at least. two points of view (one challenged and the other defended) or be ‘one-sided’ only in the sense of throwing down the academic gauntlet. If the programmer resume, former. technique is chosen, the author must create a genuine dialogue of ideas with her opponent, real or imaginary, expressing the opposing view fairly and. acknowledging any difficulties with her own. Equally importantly, there can be no and-that’s-an-end-of-the-matter tone in an argumentative essay. There is, and can be, no end to hamlet's soliloquies academic. debate, and an essay’s conclusion will necessarily be one with which readers can disagree.

If disagreement is not possible, then the argument has. been circular or tautologous. No academic argument is impenetrable, and programmer resume, every one is an thesis the last sentence invitation to further understanding. The purpose of the. argumentative essay is to show that the writer’s point of view is plausible and internally consistent, not that it is absolutely and incontestably true. The structure of the argumentative essay is the resume, same as that of the anatomy scientific research, expository essay discussed above. The main stylistic difference between expository and resume, argumentative essays concerns person.

For while the first-person singular I is inappropriate in. the expository essay, it is occasionally permissible in the argumentative essay where the author is expressing a personal opinion. Even so, an over- abundance of such expressions as I think and it seems to me smack of egotism and can irritate the reader. It is therefore wise to be frugal with the. The first person can, of course, be used freely in the early stages as the writer gathers her thoughts, but most occurrences are easily banished in. the drafting stages. The simplest way is often to delete them. Eeg Research? Thus In my opinion, Herzberg’s theory has two major weaknesses. Herzberg’s theory has two major weaknesses. But in what circumstances may the resume, author legitimately raise her head?

Firstly, in cases where she herself has not set the hamlet's through essay, essay, the title itself can. be a guide. For example, 'How Plausible is Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation?' does not invite the use of the programmer, first person in quite the same. way as 'How plausible do you consider Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation to be?' Secondly, as noted earlier, the first person should never. be used to mla format interview paper describe what the author did, but only what she thinks. First-person statements are best kept to a minimum, reserved for the most important or thought-provoking ideas in the script or, occasionally, to. It seems to me, then, that the reasons for the fall in the birth rate have.

less to do with the programmer, advent of oral contraception than the conscious decision. by women to balance their careers with their family commitments. However, I am less sure of Jones’s (2001) claim that such a fall could have resulted. But even here, the first person can be avoided if the writer feels it is in danger of overuse. Thus the opening of the first sentence is easily changed. Arguably, then, the reasons for the fall in the birth rate while the opening of the second sentence can be changed to Less convincing, however, is Jones’s (2001) claim that Few writers will produce a satisfactory essay in one sitting. Most will find themselves with a lengthy first draft in interesting paper topics, considerable need of pruning and. refining before it meets the requirements of quality and programmer, size a task that can involve more work than was spent on the research. But while sweat.

is necessary, tears are not. If the thesis statement, writer is faced with the distressing prospect of having to dispose of substantial, well-written passages on which. considerable effort has been spent, then those passages are either irrelevant to the thesis statement or the consequences of programmer resume, its overdevelopment. Let us deal with irrelevance first. A dangerous temptation for hamlet's through soliloquies, the unwary is to programmer resume focus on a key word or phrase in abetterearth environmental essay, the essay title and then to write down all that is known about it, which.

more often than not involves needless definition. The writer, that is, will unnecessarily define or explain a concept when what is required is the. application of programmer, that concept to explain something else. Take, for example, the essay title, 'Assess the value of interesting college topics, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs with. reference to a business organisation'. Some students will immediately plunge in with something like this Maslow’s Hierarchy comprises five levels of need from resume low to high which. people seek to satisfy in mla format interview research, ascending order: (1) physiological needs (such as. food, water and shelter); (2) safety needs (security and freedom from. danger); (3) social needs (affection and acceptance in groups); (4) esteem.

needs (being valued and respected by others); and (5) self-fulfilling needs. True but irrelevant. The writer has wasted time (and probably marks) defining Maslow’s Hierarchy instead of getting on programmer with the anatomy of a scientific research, business of. assessing its value The investigation into Anyfirm revealed how it is resume possible to descend. Maslow’s Hierarchy as well as ascend it. It became evident from papers the. interviews with the staff that, following the announcement of possible. redundancies, there was now far less concern with the satisfaction of the. higher needs and a corresponding increase in resume, concern with the hamlet's soliloquies essay, lower.

With their jobs under threat, the programmer, lofty goal of self-fulfilment was sacrificed. for the college research topics, humbler and more urgent goal of job security. That the writer understands Maslow’s theory is apparent from its application. Overdevelopment, on the other hand, is the result of programmer resume, poor planning. Academics writing papers for publication usually have some discretion in. respect of the length of interesting college, their work. The hapless student does not.

A victim of her own enthusiasm, she can find herself with a script so far in. excess of what is admissible that to programmer prune it without mutilation becomes impossible. What needs to be remembered is that writing an essay of research paper, two or three thousand words is like furnishing a small living room; we can acquire some. beautiful items but, without the space, they merely transform the room into an obstacle course. Programmer Resume? All we need is a centrepiece (the thesis statement) and a few well-chosen, coordinated items (the supporting arguments and conclusion). Hamlet's Soliloquies Essay? As the body of the essay is being constructed, therefore, the.

writer should get a feel for the size of her creation and realise, sooner rather than later, whether it is programmer resume going to fit into the available space. This is not. to say that interesting digressions should be ignored. They can be noted for future development, but it must be realised that they are unlikely to. find a place in the current essay. These errors aside, the purpose of the interesting research topics, drafting stages will be to refine the work in order to achieve optimum clarity and to rid it of dross.

Advice on. how to programmer achieve these ends can be found in the sections on expletive sentences and clichés, pleonasms and verbosity. The remainder of this page. consists of a few reminders. It is a well-known fact that It has often been said that

There can be little doubt that All these verbose phrases are easily replaced with adverbs such as doubtless , evidently , generally , naturally and so forth. We can also shorten expressions and is the thesis statement the last sentence, improve the quality of English at the same time When he had written his business plan, he arranged an interview with. His business plan written, he arranged an interview with his bank. The research showed that, as far as the electorate is concerned, monetary union is not an programmer resume important issue. The research showed that monetary union is statement not an important electoral issue. Very often, we need make no change except to delete the expression Ed Miliband was elected as the Leader of the Labour Party in 2010. The interviewees were questioned, the forms were collected and the.

Most of Bach’s orchestral works were written while he was in Cöthen. He specialised in programmer, selling while his partner specialised in accounts. No one else but the secretary is thesis statement allowed to programmer resume sign cheques. Other windbags include in spite of the eeg research, fact that notwithstanding that. in view of the fact that because. on a daily basis daily, every day. the question as to programmer whether whether. We can also weed out the tautologies. Environmental Essay Contest? Each of the following, for example, should have one word deleted Finally, we should also guard against programmer our own naïvety. All writers want to impress their readers, but using verbosity to disguise a commonplace is. not the way to do it The investigation method used to obtain the information necessary to.

As a legal recruiter, I review numerous resumes each week in programmer resume, an effort to assist my candidates with the substance and presentation of paper, their one-page life summaries. Here are ten tips based on the most common problems I see and questions I am asked: 1. Assume no one will read your resume word-for-word. Picture your interviewer pulling your resume off the printer and resume reading only what he can in eeg research, the time it takes to walk back to programmer resume his office.

You need to make the abetterearth contest, most important stuff jump off the page. Use bold. Use bullet points. Use headings. Give some thought to programmer resume the format that will convey the necessary information in the most logical way. 2. Be concise and make every word count. This is growth through essay related to Tip #1. You want the most important stuff to jump off the page, but every word on your resume should serve the purpose of showing that you are the best candidate for the specific job. It’s just one page. Resume! 3. Tailor your resume to the specific job. Keep in the forefront of your mind that you are applying for a legal job.

Do not view “updating” your resume as merely adding to the same document you first created 20 years ago. Delete information that is no longer relevant #8212; remember, every last word should serve the purpose of getting you this job. Mla Format Interview Paper! If you are applying to 10 general litigation openings, one version may be just fine. Programmer Resume! But if you are applying to some general litigation spots and some patent litigation spots, you may want to of a research paper have two versions of your resume, with each tailored to programmer the specific opening or category of opening. 4. And remember from Tip #2, every word counts. Don’t use neutral words where a more positive word could convey more meaning. For example, which is programmer more powerful, stating that you “worked on” a project or that you “successfully implemented” a project? 6. Be sure all information is up-to-date. If you are no longer on a committee, delete it from your resume or indicate the papers, proper dates. Change the verbs (“represent,” “draft,” “negotiate”) from the descriptions of programmer, your prior jobs to the past tense (“represented,” “drafted,” “negotiated”). Thesis The Last! No longer fluent in French? Be accurate in the assessment of your language ability as of today, not as of mid-way through your junior year abroad. 7. Additional Information: Space is a commodity, but you should still make room for two or three lines that show you are a human being and not just a robot. Include a few interests (but be sure they are real interests of yours and not aspirational hobbies).

Maybe you and one of the interviewers will find you have a hobby in common. If nothing else, this “fluff” gives interviewers some material for a few softball questions to break the ice or end the interview on a lighter note. Aside from true interests/hobbies, include language abilities, bar admissions, and memberships/affiliations so long as you are an active and not just passive participant in these organizations. Remember the resume, essential test: “Can you talk intelligently about it if asked?” If someone asks about mla format interview paper your membership in an alumni network, will you state proudly that you assisted in raising $500,000 in alumni contributions for a scholarship fund or will you cower in your chair and confess that you are on programmer the e-mail list for the committee but have yet to attend a meeting? 8. Interview Paper! Education first or work experience first? This is a common question. Remember Tip #1 #8212; you want the most important stuff to jump off the page. So if you went to a top law school, you may want to list education first. If your law school was not as highly ranked but you somehow landed a job at Wachtell, list work experience first. In the resume, case of a tie, I’d go with work experience first.

9. Through Soliloquies Essay! The squint test : It seems a bit unsophisticated but it works. Tape your resume to programmer a wall about through essay 10 feet away or just hold it far out in front of programmer, you and squint. Does the balance of black and white on contest the page make your eyes happy? Is there much too much dense text? Or way too much white space? If you’ve ever strung lights on a Christmas tree, it’s the same principle. Programmer! Squint and thesis statement then follow your instincts. Programmer! 10. Abetterearth Contest! Proofread your resume carefully.

Then proofread it again. Programmer Resume! Then ask a friend to proofread it. And another friend. And your legal recruiter. Then proofread it again. Research! Nothing screams “Don’t hire me!” like a glaring typo or spelling mistake. 10?. Programmer! Here’s a freebie. It’s not the interesting, most important tip unless… well if it is, you know who you are.

If I can see it, so can the recruiting coordinator and so can the partner at the firm where you’re interviewing. Oh, and one more thing: your Twitter feed will also now show up on the right-hand sidebar. I’m not asking you to stop using social media. Abetterearth Environmental! But if you are indiscriminate about your tweets, think about setting up a separate e-mail address for the job search process. There is not just one right way of designing a resume. But there are wrong ways. Look at models but don’t just copy someone else’s. Programmer! commemorative essay Maybe you're a kid wondering how a move from the United States to a foreign country might change your life. Maybe you're a parent pondering the pros and resume, cons of statement taking another foreign assignment. Will multiple moves irrepairably damage a youngster's psyche? Here are some of my thoughts, based on my personal experience. When I use the term global nomad(s) I do so loosely to resume describe my own thoughts as one member of that group. This is not an academic treatise on abetterearth essay contest the subject -- only a sketch of some elements of the experience I have found particularly noteworthy.

Who is a global nomad? A global nomad is an resume individual who, spending a significant part of their developmental years in another culture, develops some sense of belonging to both the host culture and the home culture, while not having a sense of total ownership in statement either. Elements from both (or multiple) cultures are blended, resulting in the third culture. Global nomads don't all have the same experiences in the same countries. What they have in common is the experience of moving multiple times to various countries that become part of their cultural identity. They don't necessarily share a similar background, they don't necessarily speak the programmer resume, same languages, they didn't necessarily go to mla format interview the same international schools. But they share the experience of resume growing up in culture(s) not their own. I personally prefer the term global nomad coined by soliloquies essay Norma McCaig to another frequently used phrase, third culture kid or TCK. Resume! Beginning in 1970, at research paper the age of 18 months, I spent sizeable portions of my childhood, adolescence and teen years moving every one, two or three years. I didn't stop to resume question my nomadic life until I was 26, working in Japan for a Japanese company and feeling completely uprooted. The comments that follow relate mostly to my experiences of being a US passport holder, but a mix of Japanese and American cultures with a dash of European for essay, spice.

It took misery to prompt me into wondering what it would be like not to move every couple of years. It seemed to me that for many people, having a stable community and home during childhood was a source of stability and strength. I began questioning how my life would have been different had I not moved so continuously. I realized that my journey had provided me with many positive tools, and some very difficult experiences. I needed to sort them out, so I made a list and pondered it. The following is a result of my thoughts.

I like to resume start with the bright side. After comparing notes with other global nomads and thinking over my life, these are some of the upside elements of living all over the world. Cross Cultural Skills. It took me a long time to articulate and value the concept of cross cultural skills. This shouldn't happen anymore . . . parents, teachers and business communities must become more aware of these skills so they can acknowledge and encourage them in their children, employees and peers. Flexibility, tolerance and contest, strong observation skills are cross cultural skills par excellence. And as the world becomes ever more fast-paced global nomads come already equipped with the necessary skills to change adjustment stress into programmer, success. As cultures and communities come increasingly into of a research, contact, global nomads know how to programmer resume respect, observe and learn from cultural differences. We don't assume that our way is the best or only way.

We are life-long learners, and the world is our classroom. These are critical skills in a world looking for economic prosperity and peace, when in the past there has been a tendency to destroy what we don't understand and anatomy paper, annihilate those who are different. We can also be wonderful teachers for others who aren't used to resume dealing with rapid change. Global nomads tend to thesis think quickly on our feet and can take the initiative to troubleshoot -- but we often do so in a context of understanding the currents and observing the situation first. Since being back in the US for several years now, I've noticed that flexibility and tolerance don't always translate as strong points in American life. It seems to me that holding a strong personal viewpoint and demonstrating leadership is highly valued.

A person's forceful thinking and handling of a situation garners kudos. Observation in particular seems to be underrated. I know from programmer resume experience that Americans will often underestimate or ignore someone who is not loud, flashy, and quick. Many cultures point out that we have two eyes, two ears and eeg research, only one mouth. Resume! . Eeg Research Papers! . for good reason. Programmer Resume! The Japanese have a saying, Silence is golden. Global nomads try to figure out which way the environmental essay contest, river is flowing before we jump in. There are many times when I have thought how much Americans have to learn from these perspectives. Another great aspect of being a global nomad is our multi-dimensional world view. From a very young age the world as we know it is programmer resume, not limited to county lines, a section of the mid-West or even a single country. The rest of the interview, world is not merely a 20 minute segment on Fifty Minutes, a National Geographic article or an programmer resume English speaking pen-pal.

I have celebrated Oktoberfest on the Rhine with German friends, eating raw pork with onion on a thick slice of rye bread. I have walked around the magnifient ice carvings during the Japanese Sapporo snow festival with friends from college research Japan, Indonesia and Palestine. I know as much about British history and geography as I do about the United States, and I remember when commemorative coins were issued in Solihull, England to programmer celebrate the marriage of Diana, Princess of Wales, to the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles. When a global nomad reads the news, they can often picture and feel what's happening thousands of miles away. This does not generally apply to kids who grow up in one culture. My sister Suzanne returned to the United States at essay the age of 14, having lived abroad since she was three years old. It was her most difficult move, and part of that was because she no longer had a global nomad peer group.

She was attending school at an upscale, East Coast boarding school as a day student. The day the Berlin wall fell in resume 1990 she ran to growth soliloquies essay the commons room to watch the news. She and I had once stood, gazing at the concrete and programmer, barbed wire no-man's land dividing Germany, with a German friend who had family somewhere past the armed guards. Excitedly thinking about how the eeg research, Froelich family must feel, Suzanne asked her fellow students to resume turn to the news. Essay! It was 12 o'clock. Several other young teens deemed a popular soap opera more important.

This is an important point, because unlike kids who grow up in one place, a global nomad feels connected to resume events taking place all over anatomy of a scientific research, the world. When an earthquake toppled highways in Kobe in January of 1995 and killed over 5,000 people, I wept with the programmer, rest of is the thesis statement Japan. Programmer! When floods destroy parts of Bangladesh and anatomy scientific, typhoons sweep away hundreds of people in India, I think of my friends, and resume, their families, and statement sentence, I pray for their safety, just as I do for people killed in mudslides in Seattle. We recognize that people everywhere share the joys and pains of life. Resume! We've lived, felt, smelt, heard and witnessed wide swaths of human experience. One of my personal challenges has been to accept people who haven't traveled and aren't interested in papers traveling as fine people.

For a long time I felt that most people from my home culture -- Americans -- were relatively shallow and narrow-minded. During conversations with most Americans I found them woefully ignorant of international events, personalities or issues. In general they seemed uninterested in the world, complacent and arrogant. Feelings like these can really put a damper on programmer friendships -- but more about that in eeg research the section on intimacy. Along with a wider world view comes a greater spiritual perspective as well.

This is partly the result of global nomad skills with flexibility and tolerance. It is also because we observe that different people's experience has created different truths in their lives -- from how to programmer resume relate to self and others to how to relate to spirituality. Anatomy Scientific Paper! When you spend your childhood observing and experiencing so many wonderful variations on how and what to eat (most Americans won't touch raw fish and visibly cringe at the idea of raw pork), how to speak and programmer resume, dance and abetterearth environmental essay, organize in groups -- it's easy for the global nomad to question those who promote a belief that there is only ONE way to nourish a spiritual life. Rather than be threatened by different belief systems, global nomads often relish the beauty in programmer resume the diversity of religious systems, taking something from everything. And then there is maturity level. Most global nomads tend to be a couple years ahead of their home country counterparts in terms of maturity.

We have wonderful skills for handling formal situations, and interesting college topics, when we answer phones we are polite, we remember to take messages and we are often mistaken for our parents. It comes from often being repeatedly tossed into situations where entertaining -- either business or diplomatic -- is a regular event. There is also a sense of maturity that springs from success when you make friends, adjust to a new school, and learn your way around public transportation systems. By the time I was a senior at the American School in Japan getting around Shinjuku station was a breeze, a daily 2 and programmer resume, a half hour commute to and from school was nothing, and my day away from home generally stretched from 7 am to statement the last sentence 6 pm -- with homework until late at night. I worked harder in highschool for longer hours than I did for the first year and resume, a half at Pomona College.

In fact, when I arrived at college I had few common interests with my first year classmates, and research paper topics, found myself making more friends among the Juniors and Seniors. On the other hand, there are areas of development where the global nomad may be totally out of phase. Programmer Resume! My parents actually had to bully me into a driver's education class when I was 17. We were in abetterearth environmental contest Maine on homeleave for two months, and programmer resume, I didn't want to research paper topics do it. What was the point? In Tokyo there was a great train and subway system that got me where I wanted to go far faster than any car could have.

I had no interest in resume learning how to drive a car -- I figured when I returned for mla format interview paper, college that I would rely on programmer resume the train and bus system wherever I wound up. There were kids in my driver's ed class who were 14 and a half and college paper, couldn't wait to be able to drive -- and programmer resume, couldn't believe I had no interest in learning how to drive. I still have trouble remembering my social security number, and I only established a credit card history two years ago at the age of 27. Being bilingual or multi-lingual is valuable. Soliloquies Essay! When you're at a school where people speak five, six or seven languages it doesn't seem like knowing another language is that big a deal -- but it is.

I deliberately put this in the pro category because people (and Americans in particular) can be strange about language ability. There is a lot of programmer lip service paid to is the thesis the last sentence the advantages of knowing another language, but there are still alot of people who think of it as a novel conversation piece and leave it at that. Beyond working for the UN or doing translation work people rarely see language capability as important, and are quick to stick to programmer resume their own familiar words. When I lived in England, despite being obviously American, my English papers had marks taken off for every u I forgot to add to words like colour and favour. Most Caucasian Americans I know dismiss language ability as unimportant in a world where English is the language coin of the realm. Language is mla format research, a touchy, natinalistic issue (witness the French rejection of English infiltration). I maintain that the programmer, Canadians and the continental Europeans (many of mla format whom know at least two or three languages) are on the right track. Languages offer different people a variety of way of expressing themselves creatively.

Who wants only one kind of art? Why would we want only one kind of language? So that's a quick summary of some of the programmer resume, pros that come to mind about mla format being a global nomad. Obviously all the above skills vary depending on the person, how many times they moved, and the attitudes of their parents. So what's on the darker side of the global nomad experience?

I have found that to resume get to eeg research papers the place of celebrating the pros of being a global nomad, I had to programmer resume deal with some painful emotional issues -- and I still do. I suspect that the global nomad who does not at some time recognize and work with the following issues finds sooner or later that their relationships, their work, and their larger world view are in chaos. One of the interesting college topics, drawbacks is a sense of rootlessness. The belief that you belong simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. When I meet people and resume, they ask me casually, So, where are you from? I always determine what level answer I want to share. There's the eeg research papers, short story -- Seattle. There's the potential story -- Seattle, but I spent over twelve years of my life living abroad.

And finally there's the programmer resume, all out response -- I call Seattle home now, but I lived in Japan for ten years, Germany two years and spent a year and is the thesis the last, a half in the United Kingdom. I consider myself to be different parts of programmer resume all these places and people. The struggle in answering the question Where are you from? is a common experience, and you don't want to waste time and breath on someone who doesn't really care. To transcend rootlessness is to feel at home wherever you are, regardless of environment. Home is reframed to include the abetterearth, world. Programmer! For me, this journey started when I made the decision to start with my self. I believe that as long as you feel at the last sentence home in your own skin, you'll always find a way to create home around you. Restlessness is a kindred spirit to resume rootlessness.

I once read that 75 percent of essay global nomads change colleges at least three times. Neither I nor my sister changed colleges once. . Resume! . so someone out hamlet's growth soliloquies, there is doing a lot of moving around! On the other hand, once I graduated from college I moved four times in as many years. My sister Suzanne just graduated from college and has moved three times in nine months. For most global nomads, it's simply a question of when, not if, they're going to programmer keep on roaming. Yet sooner or later most global nomads face a crisis (or repeated crises) that bring them face to face with the the last sentence, question of how often and where do they really want to move. How restless are they? Why do they feel that way? Is it serving them or is it an archaic bit of life left over programmer resume, from their childhood experiences?

It took me until my late twenties to environmental contest acknowledge the deep sense of rootlessness and insecurity that my exotic overseas life masked. I'm still in the process of trying to figure it all out. Right now what seems to work is living in programmer a place I call home while knowing that I could travel if I wanted to. Pretty soon I will have been in Seattle for three years. . Interview! . the longest I've lived anywhere since I was nine. . . and I'm curious to see how that will feel. Trouble with intimacy. Global nomads know how to be mobile. Traveling for business or fun poses little problem. But that same footloose attitude doesn't always bode well for relationships.

The idea of commitment, daunting enough for most people, can stir tremendous insecurity and fear in for programmer, those raised around the world. It's ironic. On one hand global nomads step into situations with other global nomads and rapidly form strong relationships with them -- usually because they are talking about their experiences, their shared culture. But on research paper the other hand global nomads know how to programmer resume keep emotional distance. College Research! Until recently I always kept a margin of emotional detachment in all my relationships. My emotional antennae, finely tuned for any vibration of the programmer, word goodbye, worked overtime. I felt like I had to anatomy of a research be vigilant and prepared at any moment to draw into the protective sheath of my goodbye armor. Global nomads say goodbye multitudes of times -- not only to people, but to schools, to homes, to cultural identities, to aspects of resume a country they have come to love.

Trusting a relationship to stay the course through the joy and growth essay, the pain of life flies in the face of accumulated global nomad experience. We all handle the separation from friends and places differently. Some global nomads attempt to maintain friendships long distance. With each move, as the programmer, list of correspondants grows and the pain increases, this can be a formidable task. The Internet, with it's gift of e-mail, is a godsend for scientific, global nomads. Instead of expensive phone calls and/or time-consuming and outdated letter correspondence, you can type off an update and send it to dozens of resume people all over the world and they'll be reading it sometime within the of a scientific research paper, next 24 hours.

Although some global nomads work at relationship despite time and programmer, distance, some do not. Some can end relationships on the turn of a dime. When they learn a friend is leaving in a couple months, they turn and walk away, thinking that if they start letting go now that when the moment of true goodbye arrives it will not sting and ache quite as much. This is not just some neurotic problem -- it is a response that builds up over several experiences of being told by a parent that We're leaving Singapore for France when the school year ends. Isn't that a surprise? It builds when global nomads discover that friends are leaving a year earlier than expected, and will be gone within the month. For a long time my thinking ran something like this: the through essay, best line of defense against pain is a good offense, therefore guard against vulnerability and be prepared to drop a relationship at a moment's notice. Some of my deepest on-going struggles are the programmer, ones I have with trusting and creating geniune relationships. Because I am asked again and again to thesis statement the last be vulnerable.

To reveal my true feelings. To allow myself to care deeply about the presence and love of other human beings. To be willing to share pain and tears and witness them in another without running away. In this journey there is no room for unilateral decision-making, or unilateral leave-taking. This will be part of my life-time work. Loneliness and programmer resume, isolation can become unwelcome bosom buddies as a single move turns into two, into essay contest, three, into four. Programmer Resume! It is interesting topics, a lifelong challenge for anyone to handle the balance of past and present in a way that leads to resume a fully lived present. Global nomads tend to hamlet's growth through either be more susceptible to living more in the past (especially if they're unhappy with a new school, location or living circumstance) or denying they ever had a past at all. Opening to past sadness or other people requires a level of vulnerability that can at first feel devastating.

It is tempting to insist that I can take care of myself, I don't need anyone else. Self-reliance and independence are valuable resources, but not at the expense of programmer pushing away help when you need it. When I was about 13 years old I adopted the research, Simon and Garfunkel I am a rock philosophy of life -- and I spent years feeling isolated and programmer resume, lonely . On top of that, I learned to expect airport delays, long waits for the packers to finish packing or unpacking our home and an even longer time spent finding friends. I filled those hours/days/months with books and thoughts. If I am being aware, I can slip into times when being sociable is too much of a burden. . . it's easier, more pleasant, and more fun to be by myself. When you haven't had a sense of having a large social support group, it can be difficult to develop and maintain a social support group later.

Most people take this for hamlet's through essay, granted -- they have friends, family, church folks and a sense of community to lean on. They know that they are isolated only resume if they choose to be. But for those of thesis statement the last us who have moved around a lot, stable community is a new concept, and it takes time to resume really understand or trust it. The rootlessness and struggle with intimacy will create all kinds of interesting college topics learning opportunities in any close relationship a global nomad has. Those who have grown up in one place will probably have a tough time understanding their friend or partner's restlessness, the programmer, desire to move, the interesting college research, need for change. And if you're with another global nomad. . . who gets to choose where to live next?! Of course there are those who, having moved all over the world as a child have no intention of moving again, ever! They can become very permanently settled, but this is less common, particularly during the college transition. Unresolved grief is probably the heaviest burden in resume the backpack of the global nomad. When you say goodbye as many times as a global nomad does you can start building up some pretty intense grief.

I've been told the average number of goodbyes for global nomads is eight times by the time they're 18 years old, although for me it was five times. But that's just the times when I was the one leaving, it doesn't include the goodbyes I said to others who were going while I stayed behind. How you handle partings becomes a critical component of the rest of your life. It's taken me years to figure out how to respond when even small goodbyes trigger mudslides of denial and emotion. For example, 24 hours before my fiancee leaves for a three day business trip I start withdrawing. A sense of loneliness way out of proportion with the time he will be gone wells up in me. And as I'm driving away from is the dropping him at the airport, I always cry. Over the programmer resume, last year I've gone from tears streaming down my face to a tear drop or two, and now I don't have a crushing sense that I'll NEVER see him again. Because now I know it's less about him leaving than it is about my emotional goodbye button getting a firm push.

The goodbye at the airport scenario takes on gothic, mythic overtones for the global nomad. Grief happens and hamlet's soliloquies, it can't be reasoned with. The truth is there's only way out of resume it -- and that is by essay going through it. If nobody gives you time to say what you're feeling out loud, to programmer listen to eeg research papers you in your sadness, or to acknowledge that it hurts to be away from people and places you love, you tend to stuff it all inside. And when this happens over several moves, you've got some pretty potent grief gnawing at your heart. Everyone experiences grief -- it's not that global nomads have a corner on the grief market. But we experience loss on programmer resume a more regular and intense basis, and eeg research papers, often with a greater sense of programmer resume being alone than those who experience loss while living continuously in their home town. Parents and educators need to realize that it is critical for the global nomad (and themselves) to hamlet's through have time to grieve.

Parents need to resume witness to that grief. Without guilt, without defensiveness -- but to really hear the sadness. Otherwise, that grief and loneliness will help create relationship chaos for that global nomad throughout his or her life. Technology -- and a culture that values stoicism -- doesn't allow much time for dealing for grief anymore. Planes take off from the US and land half a world away in a matter of 13 hours. Air journies don't lend themselves to grieving. You're dehydrated (no way to cry), cramped (no room to papers draw a breath) and in a public area (the person next door is not going to be thrilled about witnessing your emotional squall).

There used to be time to process grief associated with travel. My ancestors who left Scandinavia in 1891 and 1902 took steamship rides that lasted five or six weeks -- they had ample time to process their leave-taking. There is another closely related con here too, which is unresolved anger. Resume! I'm not going to is the write about it yet though, because I haven't figured this one out. Programmer! I can say that it's there, but I can't offer any perspective or suggestions for how to recognize or cope with it yet. . . but give me time. What I realized writing this is that every pro carries seeds of cons and every con carries seeds of anatomy of a research pros. Because global nomads have ached at the loss of programmer resume locations and friends we love, we tend to college research paper topics be highly compassionate and empathic folks. Programmer Resume! We understand isolation, we understand discomfort around being new, we understand the feeling of not belonging.

It is a rare global nomad who will not reach out to interesting college the person who is new, or try to comfort someone suffering from a deep loss. To this day certain memories are a source of programmer resume joy and is the statement the last, wonder to me. I am continually reminded of how blessed I have been to have two parents who were brave and strong enough to venture into unknown lands. They wanted to get to know people in various countries on a deep personal level, rather than isolating themselves comfortably in ex-pat communities. Programmer! When I get married this coming August there will be people present who will have traveled from all over the US, Germany, Japan, Australia and Singapore to join the celebration. These are people who have been part of my family's international community of friends for decades. It is an honor to know that I am woven into the weave of so many different worlds.

I can truthfully say that looking back from where I am today, I wouldn't have choosen a different childhood. 1997, Debra Carlson, WorldWeave Publications.
